Puppy & Kitten Care

Bringing home a brand new puppy or kitten? Find out all of the ways that our team at Tranquility Veterinary Clinic can be your partner in giving your new best friend the best possible start to life.

Caring For Your New Puppy or Kitten

Caring for a new puppy or kitten is a big responsibility, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling as you make sure that the needs of this small, mostly helpless, animal are fully met. At Tranquility Veterinary Clinic, we want to help! We offer a full range of services specifically suited to young puppies and kittens, including spay/neuter procedure, vaccination schedules, and microchip insertion.

Timely care is essential for puppies and kittens. For this reason, we recommend that you schedule a first exam for your new pet as soon as you bring them home.

If your new pet will be joining a home with other pets, we strongly recommend keeping them separate from other pets until they have been examined. This way, we can determine whether they’re carrying any potential parasites or diseases that could spread to your other furry family pets.

Overall, we want to help ensure that your experience raising a young puppy or kitten is as rewarding and healthy as possible! We are always here to support you and just a phone call away.

Spay/Neuter Procedure

We recommend the spay/neuter procedure for all our patients because of the procedure's many benefits. Sterilizing your pet reduces or even eliminates the risk of many diseases of the reproductive system. It also benefits you and your family by preventing challenging mating behaviors, such as the urge to roam, aggressive behavior, and mood changes. Both the spay and neuter procedures are quick, safe, and require minimal recovery time.

  • Spaying your female pet removes the ovaries and uterus to prevent unwanted litters, heat cycles (canine periods), mammary and uterine cancers, and unwanted behaviors, such as roaming and mood changes.
  • Neutering your male pet removes the testicles to prevent unwanted litters, testicular cancer, enlarged prostate, and unwanted behaviors, such as roaming and aggression.

Microchipping

While collars and tags are important, a microchip is the only permanent, non-removable form of identification available for your pet. Over the years, microchips have helped return millions of lost pets to their families. We recommend microchipping for all our patients, because it is simple, inexpensive, and greatly increases your chances of a successful reunion should your pet ever be lost.

Microchip implantation is a simple, fast procedure, similar to any other injection. For puppies and kittens, we can implant a microchip during the spay/neuter procedure, while your pet is under anesthesia. The microchip is a glass cylinder, about the size of a grain of rice, that holds your pet's ID number. If your pet is brought to an animal shelter, the shelter can scan for the microchip and identify your pet, ensuring a safe reunion!
