Types of Ultrasound Used

Ultrasound can be of various kinds based on the type of images required. In veterinary medicine, the most popular one is B-mode (brightness mode), or 2D ultrasound. This technique produces two-dimensional images of internal organs and is commonly used to evaluate the abdomen, confirm pregnancies, assess heart function, and examine the eyes for specific conditions.

Is Anesthesia Required for Pet's Ultrasound?

Light oral or injectable sedation is used when preforming the procedure, to ensure optimal images and samples are obtained, while ensuring there is no discomfort to the patient.

Do I Need to Have My Pet Shaved for an Ultrasound?

Yes, we shave off the fur so that we can obtain clear, sharp images. Ultrasound waves can’t pass through air, so the probe must make full contact with the skin. For certain procedures like pregnancy checks, we may be able to get good images by wetting the fur and using extra ultrasound gel. Either way, our team will handle all of this to keep your pet comfortable and stress-free.

When Will I Get My Pet's Ultrasound Results?

Because ultrasound is a real-time imaging technique, results are often available 24-72 hours after the exam. In some situations, the images are always reviewed by a Board certified cardiologist, radiologist or internal medicine specialist for evaluation. A final report will be sent to the clinic and the attending doctor on the case will call or email with results and a plan going forward.
